Roots for Food

All plants have roots under the ground. Trees have roots and grass has roots.

Roots go down in the dirt and keep plants alive. Roots are what drink water for the plants.

And sometimes, roots are good to eat. All of these vegetables are also roots for a plant.

The leaves of the plants in the middle look like normal plants, but under the dirt, you can find something different.

The roots are actually carrots, and you can eat them when you pick them. Fresh carrots are delicious!

And look at these plants. The leaves are so green and the flowers are so beautiful.

And underneath the ground, there are potatoes. Potato plants are beautiful above the ground and delicious under the ground.

And look at these plants. The green shoots look a lot like grass.

And under the green shoots are a bunch of onions.

Many times, the root is unexpected. Look at these big, green leaves. What is under them?

Yams are under the big leaves. People grow yams in farms all over the world.

So, next time you go by a field and expect to see produce above the ground, don’t forget that sometimes, the produce is under the ground.
