O'Malley Apple Orchard
This was an apple orchard. It belonged to the O’Malley family and was in the family for generations.
O’Malley Apple Orchard grew millions of apples every year. People loved thier fruit!
Connor O’Malley was the boss. He had to make sure the apples were just right. His mom taught him everything about Apples.
And just like Connor’s mom taught him everything, he taught his granddaughter everything.
Connor also worked with his daughter, Laura. He worked with the apples, and she worked with the money. The O’Malley Apple Orchard was a family business.
But the adults were not the only ones who worked. The grandchildren also had to work.
Connor’s grandchildren got to learn by using the tractor. When they grew up, they drove the tractor.
The oldest grandchild, Malcolm, was learning to drive the tractor so he could work that summer. Summer was when people picked apples. The tractor made this faster and easier.
Once the O’Malleys decided that it was time to pick apples, the real work started. They were careful to not pick the apples before they were ready.
With boxes of apples, Connor taught his grandchildren what a “ready” apple looked like.
This orchard was designed to make it easy to pick the apples. This way, they could pick the apples at the right time.
This is what the operation looked like on the O’Malley Apple Orchard. Connor drove the tractor between the rows, and the team picked the apples and put them in the boxes.
There were a lot of apples to pick, but the workers only picked the ones that were ready. Workers needed good eyes, because sometimes the leaves made it hard to see the good apples on the branches.
Apple picking was a hard job, because sometimes the trees were too close, and the tractor was too big. Workers put a ladder against the trees and picked apples from inside.
Finding all the apples in the branches was really difficult.
At the end of the day there were a lot of apples, and they all went into these boxes.
Then, they put the apples on a truck, and the truck drove away. O’Malley’s Apple Orchard grew a lot of apples!
The O’Malleys worked really hard and were very proud of their apple orchard. Those were some very special times.
