Desert Weather

This is a desert. It is a very dry and hot climate where the weather is mostly sunny during the day.

Some trees and other plants grow in the desert, but not much, really. The desert is a difficult place for plants to live because there is not much rain.

Most days in the desert are like this. There is not much more than sunshine and sand. Deserts are dry because of the many days like this one.

And as hot as the days are in the desert, the nights are really cold. Because there is not direct sun, it is important to wear a jacket in the desert.

One type of storm that deserts often get is called a “sand storm.” Sand storms happen when wind blows the sand around for a long time. Sand storms travel great distances.

Sand storms often push the sand over living plants.

When the wind stops, and the dust settles from sand storms, things are not much different than before.

It rarely rains in the desert, but when it does, it usually comes from a rain storm.

The rain falls very hard for a long time in the desert. When a lot of rain comes down at once, it is called a “monsoon.” Many plants and animals depend on these monsoons for life.

In deserts like this one, monsoons are very good because they give the different plants water that will last for a long time.

But monsoons also cause some damage, like in this picture, the heavy rain caused a flood!

A lot of animals take advantage of the heavy rains when they come. They go to the new flood, and they drink.

Yes, the desert does not get that much different weather and that is what makes it the desert.
