Natural Disasters
Most of the time, the earth is calm and peaceful. This is normal, and most of the time, life is like this.
The majority of human history has been this way, and in peaceful places, things grow, but sometimes, storms come.
The wind starts to blow a little bit more, and there is less peace in the air.
Or sometimes, the waves get bigger and bigger, and they start to hit against the beach a little bit harder.
Really dark clouds begin to come in, and rain starts to fall more and more. A storm is beginning.
In many of these storms, there is lightening, and it is very pretty to look at. But as the storm comes closer, these storms become scarier. A really big storm is called a “natural disaster.”
There are many kinds of natural disasters. This kind of natural disaster is called a Tornado. Tornados are scary because they can happen so fast!
Tornados often cause a lot of major damage. Many houses are destroyed and people die in tornados.
This natural disaster is called a “hurricane.” This is a very large hurricane that caused a lot of damage to many cities.
Hurricanes have a lot of wind and rain, and because of both of these, hurricanes cause a large amount of damage.
Even after the wind stops, the water stays around for a while. When the water stays around like this, it is called a flood.
Another kind of natural disaster is called a wildfire. Wildfires are fires that are out of control and burn large forests and groups of homes.
Wildfires mostly stay only in the forests, and often burn for hours, days, or even weeks.
Firefighters do their best to fight and control the wildfires, but it is very difficult and takes a long time.
Wildfires also cause more damage because of the smoke. The smoke goes into the air, and goes great distances.
Wildfires are caused by a lot of sun and little or no rain in the weather. When the forest is too dry, it sometimes, catches of fire.
There are many other natural disasters that happen all over the world, and they often change people’s lives forever.
But most of the time, when natural disasters are finished, things return back to the way they were before: peaceful.
