Checking in and why your English Learners NEED it for Language Learning

Updated: Dec 18, 2023

Checking in shows that you care about student growth

How a few seconds is the difference between growth and stagnation

In the realm of language learning, setting and achieving goals is a fundamental aspect of progress. For English learners, especially those focusing on improving their reading skills, establishing attainable milestones and tracking progress can significantly enhance their linguistic journey. However, merely setting goals isn't enough; a 60 second check-in plays a pivotal role in maintaining motivation, refining strategies, and celebrating achievements.

Why Set Reading Goals?

Reading serves as a cornerstone for language acquisition and proficiency development. For English learners, navigating through texts not only enhances vocabulary but also aids in grammar comprehension, cultural understanding, and critical thinking skills. Setting reading goals offers learners a structured approach to:

  1. Skill Enhancement: Defined goals encourage learners to push their boundaries, gradually advancing from simpler texts to more complex ones, thereby improving their comprehension and analytical skills.

  2. Motivation Boost: Clear objectives create a sense of purpose and motivation. Each milestone achieved reinforces a sense of accomplishment, encouraging learners to strive for more.

  3. Time Management: Goals help learners organize their study time efficiently. By allocating specific periods for reading, learners can make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.

  4. Progress Tracking: Setting benchmarks allows learners to track their advancement, identify strengths, and pinpoint areas that need improvement.

The Significance of Continuous Check-Ins:

While setting goals is essential, the process doesn't end there. Continuous check-ins ensure learners stay on track, adapt to challenges, and celebrate successes. Here's why these check-ins are indispensable:

  1. Adjustment and Flexibility: Regular check-ins allow learners and teachers to reassess their goals. They might find that certain objectives are too ambitious or not challenging enough. Adjusting goals ensures they remain achievable yet stimulating.

  2. Identifying Obstacles: Sometimes, learners might face obstacles that hinder progress. Check-ins provide an opportunity to identify these roadblocks—whether it's difficulty with specific vocabulary, lack of time, or comprehension challenges—and find strategies to overcome them.

  3. Feedback and Support: Regular check-ins facilitate interaction with teachers, tutors, or language partners. This feedback loop offers guidance, clarifies doubts, and provides encouragement, fostering a supportive environment for learning.

  4. Celebrating Milestones: Acknowledging and celebrating achievements, no matter how small, is crucial for sustaining motivation. Regular check-ins offer opportunities to recognize and celebrate these milestones, reinforcing learners' confidence and commitment.

Check-ins are crucial with our English learners in regards to them acheiving reading goals because they center the student-teacher relationship on progress. We are in school to make student lives better, and them knowing that we are there to support them in this endeaver makes all the difference.
